IN RESIDENCE @ APEXART WITH MAHA MAAMOUN: On Art and Tourism

Maha Maamoun was born in California, and grew up, lives and works in Cairo, Egypt. Working mainly through the mediums of photography and video, Maamoun often starts from generic visual representations of Cairo to explore how these intersect with and are negotiated by personal experiences. In her last works Domestic Tourism I & II, the genres of touristic images of Egypt provided a formal reference, or a point of entry, for exploring deeper social, political and psychological experiences of the city. Tourism in this context referred to a mode of navigation of a place, consumption of a locale, and to both an intimate and distant relationship to one’s environment. Maamoun is one of the founding members of CiC - The Contemporary Image Collective (www.ciccairo.com) - a space for contemporary art and culture in Cairo.

Maamoun's work has been shown in biennials and exhibitions including: Homeworks 5 – Beirut (2010), Past of the Coming Days - Sharjah Biennial 9 (2009); PhotoCairo 4 - CiC (2008); Global Cities - Tate Modern (2007), C on Cities – 10th Venice Biennale of Architecture (2006); Snap Judgments – ICP (2006); DAK’ART 6 (2004); 5th Biennale of African Photography – Bamako (2003). She was co-curator of PhotoCairo3 - an International Visual Arts festival in Cairo (2005), and assistant curator for Meeting Points 5 – an International Multidisciplinary Contemporary Arts Festival (2007).

Maha Maamoun was recommended by Edit Molnar, the General Director of the Contemporary Image Collective in Cairo.
